Federal Funding Agencies The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation, (NSF) are the major federal funding agencies in the United States. S. government also support biological and biomedical scientific research, including the Department of Defense and the Justice Department. Unlike the NIH and the NSF, the scope of these latter programs is limited. Due to the highly competitive nature of federal grants, your track record in procuring them is one of the many criteria that will be used to evaluate your future potential when you come up for promotion.
As with the agency reviewer you are likely to get, your colleague doesn't have to be in your field. But, if you give your grant to a colleague just two days before it is due, he will not have time to carefully review the proposal nor will you have time to incorporate any meaningful changes he recommends. Your colleagues are busy, so give them a week to review it and yourself 4-5 days to incorporate their suggestions. While it is good that your colleague tells you about your grammatical mistakes, this is not all that you need.
Costs to use shared instrumentation is included in this category as well. The additional categories are project specific and amounts to request will most likely be determined by your institution. How Many Years Should I Ask For? The best advice is to write a research project that will go one year beyond the ACADEMIC SCIENTISTS AT WORK 51 maximum time allotted and ask for the maximum length of time. This will allow you to have enough time to complete most of the project, even if things don't go exactly as planned.
